Fri Nov 21 05:55:11 UTC 2025: Headline: Allahabad High Court Refuses to Quash FIR in Bareilly Violence Case, Accused Told to Seek Other Legal Avenues

Prayagraj, November 21, 2025 – The Allahabad High Court has declined to quash a First Information Report (FIR) related to the September 26 Bareilly violence, which involved attacks on police personnel and the unlawful gathering of a mob. The decision was made on November 13 but published today, November 21st, in the e-Paper edition of The Hindu.

The court, comprised of Justice Ajay Bhanot and Justice Garima Prasad, dismissed the plea filed by Adnan, who is named as an accused in the case. The court stated that the petitioner is free to pursue other legal options available to him.

The FIR stems from an incident on September 26th, when Maulana Tauqeer Raza allegedly called for members of a specific community to assemble at the Islamiya Inter College in Bareilly. Despite existing prohibitory orders, a crowd of 200-250 people gathered, reportedly holding “I Love Muhammad” placards and chanting slogans.

According to the prosecution, the situation escalated after police attempted to disperse the crowd. The mob allegedly turned violent, throwing brickbats, stones, acid bottles, and firing gunshots at the police. The FIR claims that police officers were injured and their clothing torn during the melee.

The State counsel argued that the charges against the accused, which involve a grave threat to law and order, should be thoroughly investigated and any interim relief at this stage would hamper the process. They cited several Supreme Court judgments in support of their position.

The petitioner’s counsel eventually conceded that they would not press for the quashing of the FIR. Consequently, the court denied the requested relief and disposed of the writ petition, granting the petitioner the right to seek recourse in other competent courts under the law. The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding public safety and order in Uttar Pradesh.
