Thu Nov 20 12:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Curaçao Qualifies for First-Ever World Cup, Ousting Iceland as Smallest Nation

KINGSTON, Jamaica – In a stunning turn of events, the tiny Caribbean island of Curaçao has secured its place in the 2026 World Cup, becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the prestigious tournament. The achievement came after a tense 0-0 draw against Jamaica, a result that also led to the resignation of former England manager Steve McClaren as Jamaica’s coach.

With a population of just over 150,000 and a land area smaller than the Isle of Man, Curaçao surpasses Iceland (who qualified for the 2018 World Cup) as the smallest nation to reach the finals. The expanded 2026 World Cup format, with 48 nations, significantly boosted Curaçao’s chances, marking a historic moment for the nation.

The match was filled with drama, especially in the final moments when Jamaica had a potential injury-time penalty overturned by VAR, crushing their hopes of qualifying for their first World Cup since 1998.

Curaçao’s success is largely attributed to their experienced coach, Dick Advocaat, who, at 78, will become the oldest coach in World Cup history. Advocaat’s appointment came after a payment dispute, and his immediate impact has been significant. Many of the Curaçao players were born in the Netherlands but are eligible to represent the nation due to family links. Their squad includes players from clubs across Europe.

“It’s crazy and would be one of the biggest things that will happen to Curaçao,” said midfielder Juninho Bacuna. “Even a few years ago, you would not even think about it.”

Curaçao will be joined by Cape Verde, Uzbekistan, and Jordan as debutants in the 2026 World Cup, with Haiti and Panama also securing spots from CONCACAF qualifying. Jamaica will now have to compete in the Intercontinental play-offs for a chance to qualify.
