“Wicked: For Good” Delivers a Stunning Conclusion to the Oz Origin Story
HOLLYWOOD, CA – October 26, 2024 – Director Jon M. Chu has masterfully concluded the epic musical prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” with “Wicked: For Good,” a film that maintains the vibrant charm and Broadway energy of its predecessor while narrowing its focus to the central characters and their tangled romances.
Cynthia Erivo shines as Elphaba, bringing a powerful presence and surprising vulnerability to the misunderstood witch. She leads a stellar cast including Jeff Goldblum, who delivers a compelling performance as the Wizard, transforming from a charismatic huckster into a morally compromised figure akin to Darth Vader. Jonathan Bailey brings a newfound intensity to Prince Fiyero, and Ariana Grande remains captivating as Glinda, showcasing her delicate charm.
The film expertly navigates the complex relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, and their shared affection for Prince Fiyero. It grapples with the societal demonization of Elphaba’s “differentness,” raising questions about her ultimate turn to “wickedness” and Glinda’s role in it.
Adding to the spectacle, “Wicked: For Good” introduces origin stories for Dorothy’s iconic companions – the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man. A whirlwind appearance of Dorothy herself, arriving in Oz via a Kansas shack, marks the beginning of the final act.
While the Scarecrow’s backstory proves somewhat convoluted, Cynthia Erivo’s performance ensures it is moving. The film reaches an emotional peak as Prince Fiyero affirms Elphaba’s beauty, solidifying the impact of the finale.
“Wicked: For Good” is a tragicomic triumph, leaving audiences pondering the very nature of good and evil within the fantastical world of Oz.
The film is released on November 20 in Australia, and November 21 in the UK and US.
