Thu Nov 20 06:06:50 UTC 2025: Kenyan Woman Turns Cancer Journey into Mission of Hope with Knitted Prosthetics
Thika, Kenya – Mary Mwangi, a breast cancer survivor from Thika, Kenya, is transforming lives one stitch at a time. After a mastectomy and years of cancer treatment left her feeling stigmatized, Mwangi rediscovered her childhood hobby of knitting. She now creates affordable, knitted breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies, empowering them to regain their confidence and dignity.
The high cost of silicone prosthetics in Kenya, around $170, makes them inaccessible to many. Mwangi offers her handmade alternatives for just $11.60. Her initiative has not only provided a crucial service to survivors but has also created a supportive community.
Through her New Dawn Cancer Warriors support group, Mwangi provides a safe space for women to share their experiences and heal. She also trains other women to knit prostheses, providing them with a source of income and a sense of purpose. Her work has touched countless lives, offering hope and healing to those navigating the challenges of breast cancer recovery.
