Siruthuli and Karur Vysya Bank Launch Project to Revitalize Noyyal River System Anicuts
COIMBATORE, November 20, 2025 – Local NGO Siruthuli, in partnership with Karur Vysya Bank (KVB) and the district administration, today inaugurated a significant project aimed at rejuvenating two critical anicuts (dams) within the Noyyal River System: Pudukaadu and Kil Chithiraichavadi.
This initiative builds upon Siruthuli’s 23-year dedication to restoring the Noyyal River System, which serves as a vital water source for Coimbatore. The anicuts are crucial for channeling river water to interconnected tanks, but years of neglect have diminished their effectiveness. The restoration aims to enhance water-holding capacity, improve groundwater recharge, and facilitate the flow of freshwater into local tanks, addressing concerns about wastewater contamination and aquifer degradation.
The rejuvenation of Pudukaadu Anaicut is projected to benefit 533 ayacut acres and 180 farmers directly and 1,066 farmers indirectly. As many as 180 open wells and 150 bore wells will be recharged. The Kil Chitiraichavadi Anaicut will ensure enhanced groundwater recharge, a surge in agricultural productivity of farmers situated adjacent to the anicut, increased cultivation area, and improved productivity resulting in the change of cropping patterns. As many as 2,093 ayacut acres and 697 farmers will be benefitted directly and 2,500 farmers indirectly. It will recharge 697 open wells and 700 bore wells.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, Head – CSR Cell, Karur Vysya Bank, Nadhiya Mali, Coimbatore Divisional Manager, KVB, Krishnan, Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, Nallathambi, Assistant Engineer of the Water Resources Department, and local farmer association leaders S. Palanisamy and Mr. Aruchamy.
This collaborative effort underscores the importance of preserving traditional water-management systems and addressing critical water resource challenges in the region.
