Thu Nov 20 06:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Russian Spy Ship Targets British Pilots with Lasers, UK Defense Secretary Warns of “New Era of Threat”
London, UK – Tensions between the UK and Russia have escalated sharply after a Russian spy ship, the Yantar, allegedly targeted British military pilots with lasers while operating near British waters. UK Defense Secretary John Healey made the extraordinary announcement Wednesday, stating the vessel is currently positioned north of Scotland, within Britain’s exclusive economic zone.
Healey accused the Yantar of being designed for “gathering intelligence and mapping Britain’s undersea cables,” critical infrastructure for energy and communications. He revealed that a Royal Air Force (RAF) Poseidon-8 aircraft was deployed to monitor the ship’s movements, but the pilots were then targeted with lasers. “That Russian action is deeply dangerous,” Healey stated, adding a direct message to Russia: “We see you, we know what you’re doing, and if the Yantar travels south this week, we are ready.”
The Russian embassy in London vehemently denied the accusations, calling Healey’s statements “provocative” and claiming the Yantar is an “oceanographic research vessel” operating in international waters. They accused London of “whipping up militaristic hysteria” and contributing to the degradation of European security.
This is the second time this year the UK has publicly called out the activities of the Yantar. The government suspects the ship is part of Russia’s secretive deep-sea research unit, GUGI, and actively maps undersea cables used by the UK and its NATO allies. This incident, however, marks the first time British pilots have allegedly been directly targeted.
Healey emphasized that this act will not deter Britain from supporting Ukraine and that the government remains vigilant. He also stated the navy’s rules of engagement have been updated to allow for closer monitoring of the Yantar and that “military options” are ready if the ship changes course.
The incident comes amid growing concerns about increasingly reckless Russian activity near NATO territory. Healey painted a picture of a broader escalation, citing recent drone incursions into NATO airspace, alleged acts of sabotage, including an explosion on a key rail track from Poland to Ukraine, and continued Russian airstrikes in Western Ukraine, prompting NATO to scramble fighter jets.
“This is a new era of threat,” Healey concluded, underscoring the heightened security concerns facing the UK and its allies.
