Nvidia Soars Past Expectations with AI Chip Demand Driving Record Earnings

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – [Date] – Nvidia (NVDA) reported a stellar fiscal third quarter, exceeding Wall Street forecasts for both earnings and revenue, fueled by insatiable demand for its artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Shares of the AI chipmaker surged over 4% in after-hours trading following the announcement.

The company reported net income rose 65% to $31.91 billion, or $1.30 per share, from $19.31 billion, or 78 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Nvidia projects approximately $65 billion in sales for the current quarter, surpassing analysts’ expectations of $61.66 billion.

Nvidia, now the most valuable publicly traded company, attributes its success to the widespread adoption of its Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) by leading tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Oracle, and Meta for developing cutting-edge AI models. The company’s performance is considered a key indicator of the overall health of the burgeoning AI industry.

“Nvidia’s Blackwell sales are off the charts, addressing investor concerns,” said CEO Jensen Huang, highlighting the strong performance of the company’s current-generation GPU.

Data center sales, Nvidia’s primary revenue driver, reached $51.2 billion, exceeding analyst estimates of $49.09 billion, representing a 66% year-over-year increase. Compute, which includes GPUs, accounted for $43 billion of this total, while networking components contributed $8.2 billion. Finance chief Colette Kress noted the Blackwell Ultra chip family, the second-generation version of Blackwell chips, is currently the best-selling family of chips.

“Cloud GPUs are sold out,” added Huang.

While Nvidia’s dominance in AI is undeniable, the company also reported strong growth in its legacy businesses. Gaming revenue reached $4.3 billion, up 30% year-over-year, while professional visualization sales increased by 56% to $760 million, boosted by the DGX Spark AI desktop computer. Furthermore, automotive and robotics sales rose 32% to $592 million, underscoring Nvidia’s diversification strategy.

During the quarter, Nvidia repurchased $12.5 billion in shares and paid $243 million in dividends.
