Thu Nov 20 10:01:55 UTC 2025: Nepal Imposes Curfew After Clashes Between Gen Z Protesters and Former Ruling Party Supporters

Kathmandu, Nepal – A curfew has been imposed in the Bara district of Nepal following renewed clashes between youth protesters, who spearheaded the recent uprising that overthrew the former government, and supporters of the ousted Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML). The clashes prompted authorities to ban gatherings in the area until 8 PM local time on Thursday in an effort to restore order.

The unrest erupted Wednesday when both groups held rallies in the Simara area, resulting in scuffles near the airport. While no serious injuries were reported, the situation prompted immediate action from the district administration.

The clashes follow the deadly “Gen Z” uprising in September, which saw at least 76 people killed in protests sparked by a government ban on social media and deeper discontent over economic stagnation and corruption. The demonstrations ultimately led to the ousting of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has appealed for calm and urged all parties to refrain from political provocation ahead of the planned elections on March 5, 2026. “I have directed the Home Administration and security agencies to work with utmost restraint and preparation to maintain peace and order,” Karki stated. She emphasized the need for a fair and fear-free environment for the upcoming elections and has engaged with over 110 political parties to address the situation.

Karki also reiterated her vision for a new generation to lead Nepal, stating, “We want this country to be in the hands of a new generation and to be managed by people with vision.”
