Congress Scion Mumtaz Patel Slams Party Leadership After Bihar Election Debacle
New Delhi: Mumtaz Patel, daughter of the late Congress leader Ahmed Patel, has publicly criticized the Congress party’s performance in the recent Bihar elections, calling for urgent reforms and a departure from outdated strategies. In a scathing post on social media platform X, Patel expressed frustration with the party’s repeated failures and blamed a disconnect between leadership and ground reality.
“Till when will countless loyal ground workers…wait to see success?” Patel wrote, lamenting the party’s continued losses due to power being “concentrated in the hands of a few who are totally disconnected with ground reality.”
In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Patel elaborated on her concerns, stating, “We cannot function the way we did 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30 years ago. We are facing a different India. We are facing a different government. We are facing different opponents.” She emphasized the need for the Congress to adapt to the changing political landscape to effectively challenge the current administration.
While refraining from directly criticizing Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, Patel questioned the advice they are receiving, stating, “I don’t know whether they’re giving incorrect advice or correct advice. But at the end of the day, we are not winning elections.” She contrasted the current situation with the past, noting that even when a “coterie” existed, as her father was a part of, the party was winning elections and running a successful government.
The criticism comes in the wake of a dismal performance by the Opposition Grand Alliance in Bihar, where the Congress secured only six seats out of 243. Despite being the principal opposition party with a national presence, Patel expressed dismay at the party’s current trajectory. Her comments highlight growing internal dissent within the Congress and the urgent need for introspection and reform to regain electoral viability.
