Kashmiri Students Face Discrimination After Red Fort Explosion
NEW DELHI, November 18, 2025 – Kashmiri students studying in Delhi and other northern states are reporting increased incidents of discrimination, suspicion, and isolation following the Red Fort explosion on November 10th. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) held a press conference in Delhi on Monday, November 17th, alleging that students are facing “eviction and intimidation” and called for Prime Minister Modi to publicly address the “vilification” of the community.
Students report being denied service at local stores, facing accusations of “terror links” from classmates, and feeling unsafe in public. One Delhi University student said classmates told him that his parents should stop terrorist activities. He said he was forced to hide his identity due to the negative backlash. Another student from Anantnag reported being denied service at a store due to her Muslim identity. She also said that classmates joked about her carrying stones or an AK-47 in her bag. She added that she felt that people look at her a certain way after the explosion.
Another student said he felt scared and had to avoid going out. A student who wears a hijab faced increased staring and negative comments in public.
Despite increased security measures announced by Delhi University after the explosion, the JKSA notes that no specific measures have been implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of students from Jammu and Kashmir. Nasir Khuehami, JKSA national convener, stated that while official responses have been measured, public reaction, particularly online, has been troubling. He emphasized that Kashmiri students believe in Indian democracy and urged an end to the profiling and vilification of the community.
