Box Office Struggles: Familiar Franchises Fail to Ignite November Sales
HOLLYWOOD, CA – November 17, 2025 – The box office is experiencing a significant slump, marking the lowest-performing November weekend since the start of the pandemic and reaching lows not seen since 1996. The disappointing performance comes despite a slate of familiar franchises and re-adaptations hitting theaters.
Leading the charge, “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” the third installment in the illusionist heist series, opened with $21.3 million domestically and $75 million worldwide. While it garnered slightly better reviews than its predecessors, its performance highlights the challenge of recapturing initial franchise magic.
Edgar Wright’s re-adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man” debuted with $17 million domestically and $28 million globally. Despite anticipation and positive endorsements from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Cruise, the film failed to meet expectations.
Last week’s chart-topper, “Predator: Badlands,” experienced a steep 68% drop in its second weekend, raising concerns about its potential to reach the $100 million domestic milestone.
There were some bright spots. Colleen Hoover’s “Regretting You” continues to perform well thanks to strong word-of-mouth, and Scott Derrickson’s “Black Phone 2” has become the highest-grossing film of October. Sony Classics’ “Nuremberg” is also performing well. However, Osgood Perkins’ new film “Keeper” failed to generate much interest.
Industry experts are looking ahead to the winter season, hoping upcoming releases like “Wicked: For Good,” “Sisu: Road to Revenge,” and “Rental Family” will help revitalize the box office.
