Tirunelveli Slaps ₹5,000 Fine on Stray Cattle Owners Amid Safety Concerns
TIRUNELVELI, India – The Tirunelveli Corporation has announced a crackdown on stray cattle roaming the streets of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, imposing a ₹5,000 fine on owners who allow their animals to wander freely. The decision, announced on November 18th, 2025, comes in response to a surge in public complaints and traffic accidents attributed to stray cattle.
“Most dairy farmers within the Corporation limits are not keeping their animals in cowsheds, instead, the animals are allowed to freely roam the busy roads causing accidents almost every day and obstruct vehicular traffic,” stated Corporation Commissioner Monika Rana in a press release.
Despite previous warnings and the temporary detention of stray cattle, the problem has persisted. The Corporation will now levy a fine of ₹5,000 per stray cattle on the first offense. Repeat offenders will face a doubled fine of ₹10,000 per animal.
Beyond the financial penalties, the Corporation is prepared to take legal action under the Tirunelveli Corporation Act 2023 and the Public Health Act 1939 against negligent cattle owners.
Dr. Monika Rana urged cattle owners to keep their animals properly confined to avoid legal repercussions and these significant fines. The new policy aims to improve road safety and public health in the region.
