Video Game Mogul Gabe Newell’s Groundbreaking Superyacht “Leviathan” Delivered by Oceanco

Stellendam, Netherlands – The highly anticipated 111-meter superyacht “Leviathan,” owned by Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve and the new owner of Oceanco, has been successfully delivered after completing rigorous sea trials. This groundbreaking vessel represents a radical shift in yacht design, prioritizing human-centric design, crew well-being, and scientific research capabilities.

Leviathan, a collaboration between Newell, Oceanco, and its build team, showcases a purposeful approach to yacht operation. The diesel-electric vessel boasts an advanced wastewater treatment system and a battery-powered energy storage system, enabling extended periods of emission-free operation. The design also forgoes traditional high-maintenance materials like teak decks in favor of durable composite alternatives.

“Working with the team at Oceanco is incredibly enjoyable and a lot of fun; everybody is professional, creative and dynamic,” said Newell. “Not only have we designed a very unusual yacht that leans into Oceanco’s strengths of innovation and design, but the team has also been willing to collaborate with us on evolving the process.”

Oceanco CEO Marcel Onkenhout emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the project, stating, “From the very start, we knew nothing about her would be done in a traditional way. We were welcomed into the team alongside Gabe and everyone who would ultimately be involved in operating her. It is this level of collaboration that sets Leviathan apart from anything we’ve built before.”

The exterior design is by Oceanco, with naval architecture by Oceanco and Lateral Naval Architects and interiors by Mark Berryman Design. The yacht is designed to support scientific research and foster team building, with a convention-defying layout intended to bring groups together.

A unique tribute to the collaborative effort, a glass panel engraved with the names of over 2,000 individuals involved in the build has been installed in the main staircase.

Industry experts laud “Leviathan” as a potential game-changer, signaling a move towards more purposeful yachting. “The owner’s vision sets a forward-thinking example of how yachts can be built and used with intent,” said Deniz de Koningh, project director at Oceanco.

“She is not just a high-performance vessel,” added Charlie Birkett, CEO and co-founder of Y.CO. “She is a working ecosystem, designed to support everything from world-class hospitality to scientific research. That is what happens when you put people and purpose at the centre.”

“Leviathan” is one of the largest yachts under construction at Oceanco and the third-largest vessel in the shipyard’s fleet (by length), following the 127-meter Koru and 117-meter Infinity. Its delivery marks a significant milestone for Oceanco, especially following its recent acquisition by Newell.
