Karnataka Police Launch “Sanmitra” Initiative to Combat Drug Addiction
Bengaluru, November 18, 2025 – The Karnataka State Police Department has unveiled “Sanmitra” (a good friend), a comprehensive program designed to support and rehabilitate individuals struggling with drug addiction. The initiative aims to move beyond traditional law enforcement by providing sustained support, mentorship, and structured rehabilitation for those affected by substance abuse.
Director General and Inspector General of Police, M.A. Saleem, emphasized the need for a holistic approach, stating that policing should extend beyond arrests and seizures to include ongoing monitoring and support to prevent relapse. Each police station will establish a dedicated “Sanmitra” helpdesk, with trained officers assigned as mentors to individuals battling addiction. These officers will maintain contact with individuals and their families, coordinating with mental health professionals to track progress. The social circles of individuals will be discreetly examined, with any signs of substance abuse among their friends immediately reported. Special emphasis will be placed on supporting students without stigma.
The program features a confidential reporting structure, with progress reports submitted every two weeks, followed by quarterly assessments at higher levels within the police hierarchy. Senior officers will review the district-wise performance, issue further directions, and forward reports to the Additional Director General of Police, Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF).
Police officers will act as trusted guides, assisting individuals through treatment, counseling, and social rehabilitation, including regular interaction with families, coordinated efforts with medical and social workers, monthly case reviews to identify setbacks, intervention to prevent relapse, support for dignity, confidence, and community reintegration. “Sanmitra” seeks cooperation from teachers, local leaders, awareness groups, and community organizations to reduce the stigma associated with addiction.
Plans are also underway to strengthen rehabilitation support through professionally run Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts (IRCAs), ensuring comprehensive care and long-term recovery. Officials say the initiative marks a shift in the police department’s approach from mere enforcement to compassionate engagement, building a supportive ecosystem for individuals battling addiction and striving for a drug-free Karnataka.
