Headline: Tamil Nadu’s Doorstep Healthcare Scheme Reaches 25 Million, Receives UN Recognition
Thanjavur, India – November 17, 2025 – The Illamthedi Maruthuvam scheme, an initiative providing healthcare at the doorsteps of Tamil Nadu residents, has now covered over 2.5 crore (25 million) people since its launch in August 2021. The announcement was made by Health Minister Ma. Subramanian on Monday during a visit to Thanjavur, where he presented a medical kit to a resident of Pillaiyarnatham.
Minister Subramanian emphasized that the scheme, inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, aims to bring essential medical services directly to the population, particularly those with non-communicable diseases. Its success has garnered international attention, with the United Nations awarding the Tamil Nadu government the “United Nation Interagency Task Force Award 2024” in September 2024, recognizing the scheme’s innovative approach to healthcare delivery.
During his visit, Minister Subramanian also inaugurated newly constructed Primary Health Centre (PHC) buildings at Thennankudi and Vandaiyar Iruppu, as well as an additional building at the Vadakkur PHC. These infrastructural improvements represent a total investment of ₹3.27 crore (32.7 million rupees).
The Minister, accompanied by Higher Education Minister Govi. Chezhiaan, also inspected a 100-bed maternity and child welfare ward at the Government Rajah Mirasdar Hospital and a 50-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital, further highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare facilities across the state.
