Southern Wisconsin Braces for Slippery Commute as Wintry Mix Approaches
MILWAUKEE, WI – Southern Wisconsin residents should prepare for a potentially slick commute Tuesday morning as a wintry mix of snow and rain moves into the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting precipitation to begin in Milwaukee between 9 p.m. and midnight on Monday, November 17th, lasting through midday Tuesday, November 18th.
“The forecast is still a little bit approximate right now,” cautioned NWS Meteorologist Marcia Cronce. While rain is the initial expectation, the possibility of snow exists in some communities, including Milwaukee. “It depends where the band of precipitation lines up,” Cronce explained.
A narrow band of snow accumulation is possible, with potential accumulations of one to two inches in localized areas. However, forecasters expect the snow to melt quickly, particularly on roadways. Drivers should be aware that slushy snow could create slippery conditions during the Tuesday morning rush hour.
“This is our transition season,” said Cronce, highlighting the unpredictable nature of weather during this time of year. “Any kind of dynamic system like this one can pull in the colder air and turn rain into snow pretty easily.”
The NWS advises residents to monitor the forecast for updates on Monday.
More precipitation is expected throughout the week, with rain chances from Wednesday night through Saturday, peaking on Thursday. Temperatures will remain relatively mild, peaking at 51 degrees on Thursday, which is normal for this time of year.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) reminds drivers to exercise caution in slippery conditions. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking.
