Malappuram District Distributes Compensation to Hit-and-Run Victims

MALAPPURAM, INDIA – November 17, 2025 – Twenty-nine victims of hit-and-run accidents in Malappuram district have received compensation totaling ₹14.5 lakh through the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme-2022. The announcement was made at a district-level monitoring committee meeting held in Manjeri on Monday.

The scheme provides financial relief to victims in cases where drivers flee the scene of an accident, leaving those injured or bereaved without recourse. The General Insurance Council disbursed the funds, covering cases brought before the Revenue Divisional Officer, Tirur, after the offending vehicles could not be identified.

“This compensation provides much-needed assistance to those affected by these tragic incidents,” stated M. Shabir Ibrahim, secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and convener of the monitoring committee. District Crime Records Bureau sub-inspector Sajeev also participated in the meeting.

Under the scheme, victims or their families are eligible to claim up to ₹2 lakh in cases of death and up to ₹50,000 for injuries sustained. Claims can be filed by the injured individual or by family members of the deceased.
