Sun Nov 16 12:20:00 UTC 2025: FORBES – New York Times’ “Strands” Puzzle Proves Tricky, Leaving Players Stumped
By Paul Tassi, Senior Contributor
The New York Times’ beta word puzzle, “Strands,” is challenging players with its unique take on the classic word search. Today’s puzzle, in particular, is described as “one of the weirdest Strands we’ve had in a while,” potentially requiring significant assistance to solve.
In “Strands,” players must identify a series of words that share a common theme, hinted at by a clue provided by the game. Found theme words are highlighted in blue. The puzzle also features a “spangram,” a word that spans the grid and reveals the puzzle’s overall theme. Spangrams are highlighted in yellow and can be proper nouns, unlike theme words.
Today’s spangram is “THATSAWRAP” and the theme connects food and items used to wrap food or the body, including words like “CELLOPHANE,” “FLATBREAD,” “STOLE,” “SCARF,” and “SHAWL.” The difficulty arises from obscure terms and a tricky categorization between food and what surrounds it.
Players struggling with today’s puzzle were offered hints, including general directions, clues related to “clothes and food”, and the first two letters of each answer.
“Strands” editor Tracy Bennett plans to introduce varying difficulty levels, ensuring the puzzle remains engaging and challenging for players.
