Houston Heats Up: Ohio State Defensive Tackle Proving His Worth
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Once challenged to rise to his potential, Ohio State sophomore defensive tackle Eddrick Houston is silencing doubts and emerging as a key player for the nation’s top-ranked football team. Head Coach Ryan Day, who publicly challenged Houston a month ago, praised the former five-star recruit’s recent performance, particularly his strong showing against Purdue this past Saturday.
“He’s had ups and downs a little bit this year, but you’re starting to see him play his best football,” Day said during his weekly Tuesday press conference. “I think the maturity, the preparation and what he’s doing is paying off. He’s going to be a big player for us.”
Houston, who transitioned from defensive end to defensive tackle during his freshman season in 2024, initially faced a bumpy start to the 2025 campaign. An injury during preseason practice, coupled with inconsistent play, raised questions about his ability to immediately fill a starting role following the departure of Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton to the NFL.
After a solid performance against Minnesota, he had to take a step back after being injured late in the contest. A bye week in the schedule allowed for Houston to recover.
Despite these obstacles, Houston has shown marked improvement in recent weeks. His game against Penn State saw him record three tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble, earning the highest pass-rush grade among defensive tackles nationally (91.6). Filling in for an injured teammate against Purdue, Houston further solidified his role on the team.
Day, speaking to reporters, also highlighted Houston’s positive attitude. “This is a guy who just lights up a room when he walks in a room,” Day said. “Eddrick is a great young man. He’s got a lot of talent, and he’s learning how this all works.”
With the Buckeyes heading into a crucial stretch of the season, Houston’s emergence provides a significant boost to their defensive line.
