Sun Nov 16 14:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Michigan State Hit with NCAA Penalties, Vacates 14 Wins Amid Coaching Turmoil
East Lansing, MI – Michigan State’s football program is reeling after the NCAA slapped the university with a series of penalties for recruiting violations committed under former head coach Mel Tucker. The sanctions, announced Wednesday, include three years of probation, recruiting limitations, a fine, and the vacation of 14 victories – including five from current head coach Jonathan Smith’s debut season.
The violations stem from impermissible benefits provided to nine recruits, including three who played for the Spartans, by two staffers: general manager Saeed Khalif and pass rush specialist Brandon Jordan. These benefits included plane tickets and hotel stays.
Adding insult to injury, the NCAA informed Michigan State of an ineligible player participating in games last season in January 2025 – long after they occurred.
Smith, who took the job in November 2023, claims he was unaware of the ongoing investigation when hired. “Early, you know, this year,” Smith said when asked when he found out. He expressed his disagreement with the vacation of wins. “I don’t agree with it,” Smith said. “That I think we can modernize — modernize I think was a part of the quote — how penalties are enforced.”
Despite the setbacks, Smith maintains that the sanctions will not impact the program’s future recruiting efforts. “We proactively lessened the amount of evaluation days, lessened the amount of visits this fall, we were proactively talking to it,” Smith said. “We definitely are talking about (it with) the current recruits right now, knowing that this is all in our past and will not impact in any way their experience here at Michigan State.”
The university, in a statement from Athletic Director J Batt and President Kevin Guskiewicz, said they pursued a negotiated resolution “to minimize the penalties and limit the possible impact on our current football student-athletes and staff, who were not involved in the violations.”
The timing of the penalties compounds existing pressure on Smith. The Spartans are currently struggling, with a 3-14 record (technically) under his leadership. Fans booed during Saturday’s 28-10 loss to Penn State, a team previously winless in Big Ten play.
Adding to the instability, former Athletic Director Alan Haller, who hired Smith, was fired in May 2025. Haller’s departure triggered a clause in Smith’s contract, halving the buyout amount if he were to leave the program.
Tucker, fired in September 2023 for sexual misconduct, is currently in litigation with the university over his contract, which made him one of the highest-paid coaches in the nation.
Michigan State has two remaining games on its schedule: Nov. 22 at Iowa and Nov. 29 hosting Maryland at Ford Field.
