Makhachev Claims Welterweight Title, Shevchenko Dominates Zhang at UFC 322
NEW YORK, NY – Islam Makhachev proved his dominance transcends weight classes, seizing the UFC welterweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Jack Della Maddalena at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. All three judges scored the bout 50-45 in favor of Makhachev, marking his 16th consecutive UFC win.
Makhachev, who relinquished his lightweight title to pursue the welterweight crown, showcased a relentless grappling attack that Della Maddalena could not answer. After softening his opponent with strategic calf kicks, Makhachev repeatedly took Della Maddalena down, controlling him on the mat and threatening submissions.
“This is my plan. It’s not a secret, all my opponents know this, and nobody can stop it,” Makhachev stated post-fight, already looking towards his first title defense. He playfully suggested the White House lawn as a potential venue for the event in 2026.
The defeat marked Della Maddalena’s first loss since becoming the welterweight champion in May. The Australian fighter left the octagon without an interview following the defeat.
In the co-main event, Valentina Shevchenko retained her flyweight title, outclassing Zhang Weili. Shevchenko (26-4-1) swept the scorecards 50-45, showcasing a diverse skillset that included punishing kicks and dominant grappling.
“I was preparing for this fight as the hardest challenge in my life,” Shevchenko said after her victory. She also became the first female UFC fighter to record 60 career takedowns during the bout.
The evening wasn’t without its share of drama outside the cage. Prior to the main card, a brawl erupted near one of the fighter entrances, involving MMA fighter Dillon Danis and causing a temporary delay.
The undercard also delivered excitement, with Beneil Dariush, Carlos Prates, and Michael Morales all securing impressive knockout victories.
