Islam Makhachev Pledges Allegiance to Khabib’s Guidance, Eyes White House Fight in 2026

New York, NY – In a surprising revelation, UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has stated he would retire from the sport if his longtime friend and mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, advised him to do so. The statement comes ahead of Makhachev’s highly anticipated welterweight title challenge against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 in New York.

Makhachev, considered one of the most dominant lightweights in UFC history with four title defenses, emphasized the profound influence Khabib has on his life and career. He stated that if Khabib believes his time in the sport is over, Makhachev would heed his advice without hesitation.

“Khabib is like my older brother… If he told me, for example, ‘Hey, you have to stop tomorrow. No more fighting.’ I will listen,” Makhachev stated on the WEIGHING IN podcast.

Beyond his respect for Khabib’s guidance, Makhachev also outlined ambitious future plans. While ruling out a move to the 185-pound division due to weight concerns, Makhachev revealed his desire to fight at the White House in 2026, aiming to create a memorable historical event. He also expressed a longing to return to Abu Dhabi to compete in front of his fans there.

Regarding potential opponents, Makhachev remains open to challenges in the welterweight division should he claim the title at UFC 322. He acknowledged the clamor for a fight against lightweight champion Ilia Topuria but expressed uncertainty about his ability to return to 155 pounds. He will see how he feels after the fight.
