Iran Seizes Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz, Citing “Illegal Consignment”

Tehran, Iran – November 15, 2025: Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces seized a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, the Talara, in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, November 14, Iranian state media confirmed today. The vessel, carrying 30,000 tons of petrochemical products, was intercepted en route to Singapore.

According to the official Irna news agency, the seizure was carried out under court order and aimed at “protecting Iran’s national interests and resources” due to unspecified violations, including the presence of an “illegal consignment.” The statement did not provide details about the crew or the tanker’s destination.

The incident occurred amidst heightened tensions in the region, following a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in June, during which the U.S. reportedly struck Iranian nuclear sites. Iran has issued increasing warnings of retaliation since the conflict.

The U.S. Navy reportedly monitored the seizure with a MQ-4C Triton drone. The British Military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center acknowledged the incident.Columbia Shipmanagement, the Cyprus-based company managing the Talara, reported that it had “lost contact” with the tanker, which was carrying high sulfur gasoil.

This seizure follows a pattern of similar incidents involving Iran, including past attacks on tankers and the seizure of Greek tankers in 2022. Tehran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil trade. The U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, has long maintained a presence in the region to ensure the waterway remains open.
