Mexican Youth Protest Violence Following Mayor’s Assassination
MEXICO CITY – Thousands of Mexican citizens, primarily youth identifying as “Generation Z,” took to the streets across the country on Saturday, November 15th, to protest escalating violence and government corruption. The demonstrations were triggered by the recent public assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, an outspoken critic of organized crime, who was killed on November 1st during a Day of the Dead celebration.
In Mexico City, tensions escalated near the National Palace, where protesters clashed with riot police. Reports indicate that some demonstrators attempted to breach security fences, resulting in police deploying tear gas. Public Safety Secretary Pablo Vazquez reported that 100 police officers were injured, with 40 requiring hospitalization, alongside 20 injured civilians. Twenty arrests were made, and another 20 were cited for administrative offenses.
Similar marches took place in other Mexican cities, particularly in Michoacan, the state where Mayor Manzo was murdered. Protesters directed their anger towards President Claudia Sheinbaum’s Morena party, accusing the government of failing to address the escalating violence.
“Generation Z Mexico,” the group claiming to have organized the protests, released a manifesto stating their non-partisan stance and their desire for an end to violence, corruption, and abuse of power. This generation, born between 1997 and 2012, has seen similar movements arise globally, demanding social and political reform.
President Sheinbaum’s administration has questioned the legitimacy of the protests, alleging they were organized by right-leaning political opponents and amplified through social media bots.
