Gaza City – The United Nations has accused Israel of deliberately targeting Gaza’s health facilities and medical personnel throughout the ongoing conflict, further decimating the already strained healthcare system. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 1,700 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics, have been killed since the start of the war.
The accusations come amidst a dire situation in Gaza, where hospitals are overwhelmed and struggling with severe shortages of medical supplies and equipment. Despite a ceasefire agreement reportedly being in place for a month, Israel continues to block essential medical aid from entering the besieged enclave, exacerbating the crisis.
With experienced doctors killed, displaced, or exhausted, medical students are stepping up to fill the void, performing vital, lifesaving work. Many are working as doctors on the front lines. Eman Eyad, who was studying at the Islamic University before it was destroyed by Israeli strikes, is now working as a doctor at al-Shifa Hospital, the region’s largest medical facility.
Al-Shifa Hospital itself has been a target of Israeli military operations, including a siege in November 2023 and a second major raid in March 2024. Israel has claimed the hospital housed a Hamas command-and-control center, allegations vehemently denied by Hamas and hospital administrators. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have questioned the evidence provided by Israel.
“We had a new generation of doctors who are already working now as colleagues, helping us, treating our patients, with overwhelming hospitals, overwhelmed staff here,” said Hani al-Faleet, a senior pediatrician training medical students at al-Shifa Hospital.
Despite the immense challenges and personal tragedies, Gaza’s remaining medical personnel remain committed to their duty. Islam Abu Assar, a nurse at al-Shifa Hospital, remained at her post even after learning of her brother’s death, highlighting the unwavering dedication amidst the devastation.
