Sun Nov 16 15:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Former Vice President Dick Cheney Dies at 84, Flag Lowering Extended Through Friday

Washington, D.C. – Richard Bruce “Dick” Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States under President George W. Bush, passed away on Monday, November 3, 2025, at the age of 84. His death was attributed to complications from pneumonia, cardiac, and vascular disease. Flags across Texas and the nation will remain lowered in his honor through Friday, November 14th.

Cheney, who served as Vice President from 2001 to 2009, previously held the position of Secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush. Former President George W. Bush issued a statement mourning Cheney as “a decent, honorable man.”

However, the current administration has remained noticeably silent. As of Friday morning, President Donald Trump had not released an official statement regarding Cheney’s death. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the President was aware of Cheney’s passing, stating flags were lowered “in accordance with statutory law.”

The silence is noteworthy given Cheney’s recent public criticism of Trump. Along with his daughter, former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, he denounced Trump’s denial of the 2020 election results and the January 6th Capitol attack. Cheney had even endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

Trump, in turn, had publicly attacked the Cheneys, labeling Dick Cheney the “king of endless, nonsensical wars” and criticizing Liz Cheney for her primary loss.

The funeral for the late Vice President will be held on Thursday, November 20th, at 10:00 a.m. CT at the Washington National Cathedral in D.C. The location of Cheney’s burial has not yet been released.
