THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, November 16, 2025 – The State Election Commission (SEC) has officially announced the December elections for Kerala’s local bodies, setting the stage for a fierce political battle. All major political fronts are vying for control of the state’s grama, block, and district panchayats, municipalities, and corporations.
The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPI(M), is aiming to replicate its success from the 2020 elections, where it secured dominance across all local body tiers. However, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are strategizing to challenge the LDF’s hold, particularly targeting key urban centers.
The LDF currently controls five of the six corporations, a majority of municipalities, and a significant number of panchayats. The UDF holds the remaining corporation and a smaller share of municipalities and panchayats. The NDA governs two municipalities and a handful of grama panchayats.
Political analysts predict especially intense competition in major urban areas such as Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur Corporations. These elections are being closely watched as a bellwether for the upcoming 2026 State Legislative Assembly elections.
Campaign platforms will likely focus on development achievements (LDF), corruption allegations (UDF), and national-level development (NDA). Both the UDF and NDA are expected to highlight the recent controversy regarding the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple in their campaigns.
These elections also follow a significant delimitation exercise, resulting in an increase in the number of local body wards from 21,900 to 23,612, affecting local demographics and boundaries. Kerala has a rich history of local body elections, with the first election held in 1953. These are the seventh to be held after the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments of 1992 which enabled the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act and the Kerala Municipalities Act of 1994.
