28 Blackbucks Dead at Indian Zoo Amidst Bacterial Infection Fears
Belagavi, India – November 15, 2025 – An outbreak at the Rani Channamma Zoo in Bhutaramanahatti, Belagavi district, has resulted in the deaths of 28 blackbucks since Thursday. Eight blackbucks died on Thursday and 20 more died on Saturday. Initial investigations point to a possible bacterial infection.
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has announced a full investigation into the incident, ordering officials to implement immediate preventative measures to protect the zoo’s remaining animal population. The Minister stated that the investigation will examine potential sources of contamination, including water, food, and transmission from domestic animals. He further emphasized that negligence on the part of the zoo staff will not be tolerated.
The deceased blackbucks, aged between 4 and 6 years, were part of a group of 38 brought to Rani Channamma Zoo from the Binkadakatti Zoo and other locations. According to officials, the 10 surviving blackbucks, as well as other animal residents, appear to be in good health.
Assistant Conservator of Forests, Nagaraj Balehosur, confirmed that post-mortem examinations have been completed on 25 of the deceased animals and their remains have been cremated. The bodies of the remaining three are being preserved for further examination by experts from the Bannerghatta zoo.
Authorities maintain that the animals’ feeding patterns have remained consistent. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the outbreak and to prevent future incidents.
