Ariana Grande Incident at Singapore Premiere Sparks Outrage, Calls for Action
Singapore – Fans are demanding action after an Australian man grabbed actress Ariana Grande at the “Wicked: For Good” Asia-Pacific premiere in Singapore on Thursday. Johnson Wen, who has a history of disrupting celebrity events, allegedly jumped a barricade and approached Grande on the yellow carpet while she was with the cast.
Video footage of the incident, which has gone viral, shows Wen pushing past photographers before reaching Grande. Co-star Cynthia Erivo intervened, pulling Grande away before security escorted Wen from the event.
Wen later posted on Instagram that he was free after being arrested, but court documents indicated he was scheduled to appear in court Friday morning. It remains unclear if he was formally charged.
This is not Wen’s first incident of this nature. His social media feed contains clips of him disrupting events, including a stage invasion at a Katy Perry concert in Sydney and a similar incident during a Chainsmokers performance.
Fans on social media expressed outrage, calling for Wen’s arrest, deportation, and a ban from social media platforms. Many accused him of re-traumatizing Grande, who has spoken openly about PTSD following the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing. Some criticized the security at the event for insufficient vigilance.
Grande appeared visibly shocked in the video, with co-stars Michelle Yeoh and Erivo seen comforting her after the incident. Grande has not yet commented publicly. The rest of the premiere proceeded as scheduled.
The BBC has reached out to Singaporean police and immigration authorities for comment.
Hundreds of fans had gathered for the “Wicked: For Good” premiere, some waiting in line for hours. The film, a highly anticipated adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, is set to release on November 21. Grande stars as Glinda, alongside Erivo as the Wicked Witch and Jeff Goldblum.
