Fri Nov 14 09:50:00 UTC 2025: TSA Agents Rewarded with Bonuses for Service During Shutdown

Houston, TX – Some Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents are receiving bonus cheques for their “exemplary service” during the recent 43-day US government shutdown, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced. At an event at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Noem personally handed out envelopes to several agents, praising them for upholding the mission of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stepping up to take on extra shifts, and ensuring the continuity of air travel for Americans.

While the exact criteria for receiving the bonus is not fully clear, Noem stated that those who demonstrated exceptional service during the shutdown would be considered. The bonus amounts are reported to be $10,000 each, in addition to backpay for the time worked without compensation. The funds for the bonuses will come from carryover funds from the 2025 fiscal year and government savings on contracts.

The shutdown, which began on October 1st due to a funding impasse in Congress, caused widespread disruption to US air travel. The Federal Aviation Administration was forced to limit flights due to staffing shortages, particularly among air traffic controllers. These shortages where in part because agents where forced to find other work during the lapse in funds.

President Trump has suggested similar bonus payouts for air traffic controllers who maintained their duties during the shutdown. According to Noem, the DHS will evaluate every employee who helped during the shutdown to determine their eligibility for bonuses.
