Southern California Braces for Life-Threatening Flooding as Powerful Storm Arrives
Los Angeles, CA – Southern California is bracing for a major storm poised to unleash heavy rainfall, potentially triggering life-threatening flooding, mudslides, and debris flows, particularly in areas scarred by recent wildfires. The storm, which brought strong winds and heavy rain to Northern and Central California on Thursday, is now targeting the Southland.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for much of the Los Angeles area through 10 p.m. Saturday, warning that the storm could trigger dangerous debris flows, widespread power outages, and significant road flooding. Rainfall rates could reach as high as an inch per hour during peak periods.
“Residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, should start taking precautions immediately to prepare for the storm and protect their interests,” warned the National Weather Service in Los Angeles. The agency highlighted the risk of debris flows in burn areas, significant road ponding, mudslides through canyons, and fallen trees.
The storm system is being fueled by an atmospheric river, drawing moisture from the Pacific Ocean. While winds are expected to diminish in Southern California compared to the North, the flood threat is significantly increasing. An initial wave of heavy rain is anticipated Friday morning, followed by a more intense second wave Friday night into Saturday, bringing prolonged, heavy downpours.
Burn scar areas from recent wildfires, including those from the Palisades, Hurst, and Sunset fires, are particularly vulnerable. The destruction of vegetation and alteration of soil composition by the fires create conditions ripe for mudslides and debris flows. Officials are urging residents in these areas to be prepared to evacuate.
Local authorities are providing sandbags at Fire Stations throughout the City, with sand also available for free at select locations.
While the heaviest rain is expected to ease late Saturday, showers are forecast to linger into Sunday. The saturated ground will remain susceptible to further flooding and slick road conditions, especially in areas prone to slow drainage.
Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and heed warnings from local authorities.
