Islamophobia on the Rise in the US, Research Shows, Threatening Democracy

New York, NY – A new study reveals a concerning trend of rising Islamophobia in the United States, posing a threat not only to Muslim communities but also to the foundations of American democracy. The research, conducted by the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), found a significant increase in Islamophobia across nearly all demographic groups between 2022 and 2025.

The ISPU’s Islamophobia Index, which measures the acceptance of common anti-Muslim stereotypes, jumped from 25 in 2022 to 33 in 2025 on a scale of 1 to 100. The most significant increases were observed among white Evangelicals and Catholics. Researchers attribute this rise to the weaponization of Islamophobia by high-profile individuals and politicians, particularly during election campaigns and political events.

The report highlights the potential for dangerous consequences stemming from anti-Muslim rhetoric, including discrimination, bullying, and even violence. It also challenges common stereotypes about Muslims, such as the belief that they condone violence or discriminate against women. ISPU research shows American Muslims overwhelmingly reject violence and that Muslim women face more racial and religious discrimination than gender discrimination.

The rise in Islamophobia also poses a threat to democracy, as individuals who embrace anti-Muslim beliefs are more likely to support anti-democratic policies, such as limiting freedom of the press and discriminatory practices targeting Muslims.

The authors of the study emphasize the importance of confronting and denouncing hate to preserve democracy and human dignity. They hope that the recent election of Zohran Mamdani as the first Muslim mayor of New York City signals a shift away from the weaponization of Islamophobia in political discourse.
