Afghanistan-Pakistan Peace Talks Collapse Amid Accusations of Bad Faith
Istanbul, Turkey – The latest round of peace talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan, held in Istanbul and mediated by Turkey and Qatar, has ended in a deadlock, with the Afghan government accusing Pakistan of insincerity and obstruction.
In a strongly worded statement released on November 8th, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan expressed its disappointment, stating that the Afghan delegation attended the talks in good faith, expecting constructive engagement from Pakistan. However, according to the statement, Pakistan demonstrated an “irresponsible and non-cooperative attitude,” attempting to shift blame for its own security issues onto Afghanistan while shirking responsibility for regional stability.
The Taliban government reiterated its stance that Afghanistan will not allow its territory to be used against any other country, nor will it permit foreign interference in its sovereignty. The statement underscored Afghanistan’s commitment to defending its people and territory against any aggression.
Adding to the escalating tensions, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed the inconclusive nature of the talks and indicated that no further rounds are currently planned. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Minister for Tribes, Borders, and Tribal Affairs, Noorullah Noori, issued a warning to Pakistani officials against testing the patience of the Afghan people.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid stated that the conflict between Pakistan and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) predates the Taliban’s rise to power in Afghanistan, and accused elements within the Pakistani military of sabotaging previous attempts at direct talks between Pakistan and the TTP.
The collapse of the Istanbul talks has deepened the existing mistrust between the two nations and raised concerns about potential escalation of conflict. Afghanistan suspects Pakistan may conduct unprovoked attacks across the border, including drone strikes targeting the civilian population. While a ceasefire along the Af-Pak border is currently in place, the recent developments have cast a shadow over the future of the relationship between the two countries.
