MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Amen Thompson’s dominant performance, featuring 28 points and 10 rebounds, fueled the Houston Rockets to a 124-109 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. Alperen Sengun also delivered a strong showing with 20 points and 16 rebounds as the Rockets extended their winning streak to five games.
Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason chipped in with 16 points each for Houston. The Rockets’ offense was clicking, with Thompson and Sengun both dishing out seven assists apiece.
While Cam Spencer led the Grizzlies with 19 points, including five three-pointers, Ja Morant struggled from the field, scoring 17 points on 6-of-19 shooting. Santi Aldama contributed 16 points for Memphis.
Houston established an early lead and never looked back, punctuated by a decisive 24-9 run in the third quarter that stretched their advantage to 21 points. Despite a brief rally early in the fourth, Memphis couldn’t overcome the deficit.
The loss marks the fourth straight for the Grizzlies, who are struggling to find their footing under new head coach Tuomas Iisalo. The team has also been hampered by injuries to key players like starting center Zach Edey and bench contributors Scotty Pippen Jr. and Ty Jerome.
Poor shooting plagued the Grizzlies early, as they fell behind in the first quarter while Houston shot an impressive 56% from the field. While Memphis improved their shooting in the second, Houston maintained a 60-51 lead at halftime, capitalizing on 10 Grizzlies turnovers to score 17 points.
The Rockets continued their strong offensive performance in the third, with Josh Okogie adding 11 points.
Looking Ahead:
- Rockets: Travel to San Antonio on Friday to continue their three-game road trip.
- Grizzlies: Host the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night.
