Michigan Wolverines Call Off 2026 Season Opener in Germany

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Michigan has announced it will no longer be moving its 2026 season-opening football game against Western Michigan to Frankfurt, Germany. The game will now be held at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on August 29, as originally scheduled.

The university had been in “advanced discussions” to play the game at Deutsche Bank Park, home to soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt, but ultimately decided against the move after a thorough evaluation.

“We did a thorough and exhaustive evaluation in relation to playing an international game,” said Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel in a statement released Wednesday. “Based on the analysis of all the factors, we felt it was best to keep the game in Ann Arbor as it was originally scheduled for the 2026 season. I want to thank Eintracht Frankfurt and their Stadium Management company for all the work that they did in partnership with our staff to try to make this game a possibility.”

While the specific reasons behind the decision were not explicitly stated, Manuel had previously mentioned that financial considerations were among the details being reviewed by the athletic department.

The Wolverines have never played a football game outside of North America. Although the Germany game is off, Michigan remains open to future international opportunities. “We have fans and alumni around the globe, and many have expressed excitement about attending a game on foreign soil,” Manuel said. “We remain open to exploring the right opportunities for our teams to play internationally.”

Notably, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore will still be serving a suspension during the 2026 opener.

Michigan is currently listed at +725 on BetMGM to make the 2025 College Football Playoffs.
