Madras High Court Reserves Order on TVK Leader’s “Inflammatory” Tweet FIR

CHENNAI, November 8, 2025 – The Madras High Court has reserved its order on a plea by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Aadhav Arjuna to quash a First Information Report (FIR) against him for a tweet deemed inflammatory. The tweet, posted on September 29, 2025, allegedly insinuated a revolt against the Tamil Nadu government by younger generations, drawing comparisons to situations in Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Justice A.D. Jagadish Chandira deferred his verdict after hearing arguments from both sides. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Arjuna, argued that his client’s intention was merely to criticize the government’s suppression of dissent and that the tweet was quickly edited and deleted.

Opposing the plea, N.R. Elango, representing the Chennai cybercrime police, asserted that the references to Nepal and Sri Lanka demonstrated the intent to disrupt public tranquility. He argued that quashing the FIR would set a dangerous precedent, allowing individuals to misuse freedom of speech without consequence.

The FIR was filed based on a complaint by N. Shanmugham of Thiru Vi Ka Nagar in Chennai. The court’s decision is pending.
