Sat Nov 08 12:40:57 UTC 2025: ## Israel Escalates Attacks in Lebanon, Violating Ceasefire
BEIRUT – Israel has ramped up its military operations in Lebanon, conducting multiple strikes on Saturday and drawing strong condemnation from the EU, Lebanon, and Iran. The attacks, which Israel claims target Hezbollah positions, mark a significant escalation of violence despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that two brothers were killed in an Israeli air raid targeting a vehicle in southeastern Lebanon. In separate incidents, Israeli drone strikes injured seven people near Salah Ghandour Hospital in Bint Jbeil and hit a car in the Baraachit area. Casualties from the Baraachit attack remain unknown.
The Israeli military claims the strikes targeted Hezbollah, but provided no supporting evidence.
The EU has strongly condemned the Israeli attacks, calling on Israel to cease all actions violating UN Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreement. “The EU calls on Israel to cease all actions that violate resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreement reached a year ago in November 2024,” stated EU foreign affairs spokesman Anouar El Anouni. He also urged Hezbollah to refrain from actions that could further escalate the situation.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attacks as a “flagrant breach” of international law, while the Lebanese army accused Israel of trying to “undermine Lebanon’s stability.” Iran denounced the attacks as “savage” and called for international intervention.
UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, warned that the attacks threaten civilians and undermine efforts by the Lebanese military to assert control over the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled the potential for further escalation in Lebanon. Defence Minister Israel Katz echoed this sentiment, vowing to “continue and even intensify” enforcement to address threats to residents in northern Israel.
The recent escalation comes amid mounting pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah, a move the group has strongly opposed. The situation remains highly volatile nearly a year after the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in September 2024. Hezbollah maintains it will not disarm while Israel continues its attacks and occupation of Lebanese territory.
