Sat Nov 08 10:11:21 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Faces Environmental Catastrophe Amidst War’s Ruins
Gaza City – As a fragile ceasefire crumbles under daily violations, the environmental devastation wrought by the recent conflict is becoming alarmingly clear in Gaza. Beyond the widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure, the war has severely contaminated essential water sources and agricultural lands, posing lethal risks to the already vulnerable population.
In Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, a once vibrant community is now a desolate wasteland. A crucial rainwater pond, intended to channel water to the sea, is now overflowing with raw sewage and debris due to destroyed pumps and crippled sanitation systems. Displaced families, with nowhere else to go, are forced to live amidst the contaminated water, facing severe health risks.
“We took refuge here… with all the sufferings you could imagine, from mosquitoes to sewage with rising levels,” said Umm Hisham, a pregnant woman sheltering near the contaminated pond, highlighting the impossible choices facing families.
Local officials warn of potential disease outbreaks from the stagnant water, particularly among children. With limited access to clean water and sanitation, Gazans are forced to use potentially polluted sources.
At the COP30 Climate Summit in Brazil, Palestinian Ambassador Ibrahim al-Zeben condemned the situation as an environmental catastrophe intertwined with ongoing conflict. He highlighted the destruction of sewage and water networks, leading to widespread groundwater contamination and severe risks to public health. Al-Zeben also pointed to the destruction of agricultural land, exacerbating food insecurity and famine, with food being “used as a weapon.”
A recent UN report echoed these concerns, warning that freshwater supplies in Gaza are severely limited and polluted, with the collapse of sewage treatment infrastructure further contaminating the aquifer.
The dire situation in Sheikh Radwan and other affected areas underscores the urgent need for humanitarian aid and long-term solutions to address the environmental crisis plaguing Gaza, where survival is a daily struggle amidst widespread destruction and contamination.
