NEW YORK, NY – Following a string of disappointing results, Democrats are celebrating significant victories in Tuesday’s elections, a cause for much jubilation in the late-night comedy circuit. From Virginia to California, and even New York City, hosts pulled no punches in acknowledging the wins and, perhaps more gleefully, lampooning former President Donald Trump’s perceived influence on the Republican defeats.
Jimmy Kimmel kicked things off, stating, “We needed a big night. Democrats have had fewer wins this year than the Jets.” Fallon joined in, joking that the Democrats were so happy, their celebrations reminded him of “Bernie Sanders’ hair.”
Seth Meyers quipped, “It was the best day for Democrats since they put ‘Hamilton’ on Disney+,” and playfully gave credit to Trump, stating “none of it could’ve been achieved without the work of Democratic strategist, Donald Trump.” Kimmel added to the pile-on, saying “Everything he touched was a loser. Trump hasn’t been this embarrassed since he found out there was a Donald Trump Jr.”
Fallon joked that Trump “lost every key New Jersey demographic: guys in track suits, moms at the outlet malls, and the entire cast of the ‘Jersey Shore.’”
In New York City, the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor was also a source of comedic fodder. Kimmel joked that Mamdani’s name would be mispronounced by “your racist aunt and uncle” this Thanksgiving. Seth Meyers noted Mamdani would become the youngest mayor in a century and quipped that he was “somehow still more mature than the last guy.” Fallon, made a comparison, “We’ve had subway delays last longer than that.”
Beyond the political commentary, Jennifer Lawrence appeared on “The Tonight Show” and Patti Smith is scheduled to appear on Thursday’s “Late Show.” In other news, a musical stage adaptation of “Girl, Interrupted” is coming to The Public Theater.
