Thu Nov 06 09:23:02 UTC 2025: ## Sudan Displacement Crisis Deepens as RSF Capture of El-Fasher Sparks Mass Exodus
El-Fasher, Sudan – The humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to escalate, with over 80,000 people displaced since the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control of El-Fasher, North Darfur, on October 26th. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that 81,817 individuals have fled the city and surrounding villages, primarily on foot, seeking refuge within El-Fasher itself and the nearby town of Tawila.
The RSF’s capture of El-Fasher, ending an 18-month siege, has triggered a wave of violence and fear. Reports from survivors, corroborated by the United Nations and international aid agencies, detail horrifying atrocities allegedly committed by RSF fighters, including mass executions, torture, rape, sexual abuse, and ransom demands. The situation is further compounded by a spreading famine and outbreaks of cholera and other deadly diseases.
The UN reports that Sudan is now facing the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crisis, with over 9.5 million people internally displaced across the country. The majority of these displaced individuals are concentrated in South Darfur (1.84 million), North Darfur (1.75 million), and Central Darfur (978,000), with over half being children under the age of 18.
Sudan’s civil war, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese military and the RSF, has been marked by accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity levied against both sides. The RSF has also been implicated in atrocities in Darfur that the UN has warned may constitute genocide.
Even before the current conflict, Sudan already faced a dire displacement situation, with over 2.32 million people displaced due to years of conflict and climate-related crises. Since April 2023, an additional 7.25 million have been displaced within Sudan, including approximately 2.7 million from Khartoum State, and 2 million each from South and North Darfur.
Beyond the internally displaced, an estimated 4.34 million Sudanese have fled to neighboring countries as refugees, primarily to Egypt, South Sudan, and Chad. In total, the displacement crisis has impacted an estimated 14 million people, representing over a quarter of Sudan’s 51 million population. The international community is urged to provide immediate and sustained assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and address the escalating humanitarian crisis.
