West Bengal BJP Accuses Trinamool Congress of Using SIR Protests to Mask “14 Years of Misrule”

Kolkata, November 6, 2025 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to divert public attention from what it calls “14 years of misrule” in the state.

West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya made the accusations on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, a day after TMC leaders, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, took to the streets to protest the SIR process. Bhattacharya dismissed Banerjee’s claims that she would topple the BJP government at the Centre if genuine voters were removed during the revision, questioning TMC’s absence from the Bihar Assembly polls.

“Trinamool Congress is using SIR as a shield… The purpose is to divert the attention of the people from the institutional loot and deteriorating law and order situation,” Bhattacharya stated.

He further asserted that the SIR is a constitutional process and that TMC should approach the Supreme Court if they have grievances with it. He also alleged that the TMC was attributing “every unnatural death” in the state to fears surrounding the SIR.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State and BJP leader Sukanata Majumdar clarified that Hindus who migrated from Bangladesh to India before December 31, 2024, would not be deported, even without valid documents, under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Sources within the BJP revealed that Sunil Bansal, the party’s observer in West Bengal, has advised leaders to educate community representatives about the CAA, but not to pressure anyone to apply for citizenship. This comes as a faction of Matua leaders affiliated with TMC, led by MP Mamatabala Thakur, initiated a hunger strike against the SIR.

The TMC leadership has announced plans to raise the issue of SIR during the upcoming winter session of the West Bengal Assembly, where a resolution against the revision is expected to be tabled.
