OpenAI Launches IndQA Benchmark to Improve AI Performance in Indian Languages
Delhi, India – November 6, 2025 – OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has announced the launch of IndQA, a new benchmark designed to evaluate and improve the performance of AI systems across a wide range of Indian languages and cultural domains. The company collaborated with over 250 Indian experts to develop the benchmark, which consists of 2,278 questions spanning 12 languages and 10 diverse cultural topics.
According to an OpenAI blog post, India was chosen as a starting point due to its large non-English speaking population, numerous official languages, and its status as ChatGPT’s second-largest market. The IndQA benchmark covers topics such as Architecture & Design, Arts & Culture, Everyday Life, and more.
The languages included in the IndQA benchmark are Bengali, English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam, Punjabi, Tamil, and Hinglish. OpenAI is using the benchmark to track the progress of its AI models and aims to improve their performance in Indian languages.
This announcement comes as OpenAI expands its presence in India, establishing its first office in Delhi and seeking to recruit local talent. The company also recently made its ChatGPT Go low-cost offering available for free to Indian users for a year. OpenAI aims to create similar benchmarks for other languages and regions in the future.
