Indian-Origin Aftab Pureval Re-elected as Cincinnati Mayor
New York – November 5, 2025 – Aftab Pureval, the Indian-origin Mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, has secured a second term in office, defeating Republican challenger Cory Bowman, half-brother of Vice-President J.D. Vance. The victory, reported by local media on Tuesday, solidifies Democratic control of Cincinnati’s local government and further elevates Mr. Pureval’s profile in Ohio politics.
Mr. Pureval, 43, a former Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, first won the mayoral seat in 2021 with nearly 66% of the vote. His background is notable, with his Tibetan mother having fled Communist Chinese occupation and growing up in a Southern Indian refugee camp, and his father being Punjabi.
While Mr. Bowman had never held public office, he was inspired to run after his half-brother, J.D. Vance, was inaugurated. Though Vice-President Vance remained largely absent from the campaign trail, he did publicly endorse Mr. Bowman via social media.
Mr. Pureval began his political journey in 2015 as a candidate for Hamilton County Clerk of Courts.
