Roger Howarth Joins “The Young and the Restless” as Resurrected Villain Matt Clark
Los Angeles, CA – Veteran soap opera actor Roger Howarth, known for his portrayals of complex and often villainous characters, has joined the cast of “The Young and the Restless” as Matt Clark, a character originally played by Eddie Cibrian and later by Rick Hearst. Clark, a notorious antagonist from the show’s history, is set to make a dramatic return after decades of presumed death, reigniting old rivalries and stirring up trouble for the Newman family.
Matt Clark first terrorized Genoa City in the mid-1990s, becoming obsessed with Sharon Collins (Sharon Case) and developing a bitter feud with her then-boyfriend, Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow). His actions included the rape of Sharon, a secret she guarded for some time, and revealing Sharon’s adoption of her baby at 16 to Nick. Later, Clark framed Nick for drug dealing and murder and set out to rape Sharon. Matt Clark’s criminal activity resulted in Nick’s wrongful imprisonment. Eventually, Matt was exposed and, seemingly, died.
Now, 24 years later, Clark resurfaces as “Mitch Bacall” in Los Angeles, married to Sienna Bacall (Tamara Braun). Fatefully, Nick and Sharon are also in town, attending to their son, Noah (Lucas Adams), who was injured in a car accident. Sharon’s investigation into Noah’s situation leads her to Mitch, whom she immediately suspects is Matt Clark.
Howarth expressed his excitement about taking on the role, stating, “I’m really thankful that I get to play a character with mischief and devious and villainous qualities.” He hinted that while Sharon may be onto his character’s true identity, the revelation will not be immediate. “It’s important for Matt for people to continue to think that he’s Mitch. He’s built a life as Mitch. He values the life he has as Mitch. And it’s very disruptive to Mitch’s life that the Newmans seem to think that he’s another person, and he does everything he can to convince them that what they’re seeing is not the truth!”
Howarth’s debut as Mitch Bacall promises a thrilling new chapter for “The Young and the Restless,” as old wounds are reopened and long-buried secrets threaten to resurface.
“The Young and the Restless” airs weekdays on CBS.
