Mon Nov 03 18:50:00 UTC 2025: Headline: Star Closer Edwin Díaz Opts Out of Mets Contract, Enters Free Agency
New York, NY – In a move that shakes up the reliever market, star closer Edwin Díaz has opted out of his contract with the New York Mets, according to a report by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Díaz, who was guaranteed $38 million over the next two seasons, will now test the open market in search of a more lucrative deal. He joins Robert Suarez as the second high-profile closer to opt out on Monday.
Díaz, 31, originally signed a five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets after a dominant 2022 season. While a knee injury sidelined him for the entire 2023 season after an injury sustained in the World Baseball Classic, he returned to form over the past two seasons, notching 48 saves with a strikeout rate exceeding 38% and earning his third All-Star nomination this past season.
The Mets acquired Díaz from the Seattle Mariners in a December 2018 trade. After a rocky first season in New York, Díaz rebounded to become one of the league’s most dominant closers, racking up 96 saves in his first four years with the team.
As Díaz enters free agency, he joins a crowded reliever market that includes Suarez, Devin Williams, Ryan Helsley, and Raisel Iglesias, among others.
The Mets, meanwhile, face the challenge of finding a replacement for their star closer. Potential internal options include A.J. Minter, who exercised his player option to remain with the team, and Adbert Alzolay, who is returning from Tommy John surgery that kept him sidelined in 2025.
It remains to be seen whether the Mets will attempt to re-sign Díaz, but the closer’s decision has undoubtedly added intrigue to the offseason reliever market.
