Diane Lane Reflects on Punk Legacy of “Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains”
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Nearly 45 years after its release, Diane Lane is celebrating the enduring influence of “Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains,” the 1982 cult classic in which she starred as a rebellious teenage punk rocker. In a recent interview with Deadline, Lane reflected on the film’s surprising impact on the riot grrrl movement of the 1990s.
“It was so wild,” Lane said, recalling the experience of filming the movie as a teenager. After watching a TCM showing, she was “very vindicated to see that that film had the legs that it deserves to have, and it was wonderful to have been appreciated by people who went on in their music careers and were emboldened by our story.”
Set in 1980, amidst the burgeoning punk scene, the film follows Corinne Burns (Lane) and her band, The Stains, as they rise to fame while touring with established punk rockers, The Looters. The cast featured real-life punk icons like Paul Cook and Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, and Paul Simonon of The Clash.
Since its release, “Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains” has garnered a dedicated cult following, with musicians like Courtney Love, Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill, and Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile all citing it as a key influence. Lane expressed pride in being a part of the film, acknowledging its place in punk history and its impact on inspiring female musicians to find their voice.
