Browns Shake Up Offense: Stefanski Relinquishes Playcalling to Rees Amidst Offensive Struggles

BEREA, Ohio – The Cleveland Browns are making a significant change in an attempt to ignite their struggling offense. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski announced Monday that offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will assume playcalling duties, beginning with Sunday’s road game against the New York Jets.

This marks the second consecutive season Stefanski has relinquished playcalling, raising eyebrows and putting the spotlight on the Browns’ offensive woes. Cleveland currently ranks third-lowest in the NFL in scoring, averaging a meager 15.8 points per game.

“I have a ton of trust and faith in Tommy,” Stefanski stated. “He’s more than capable, so excited for him. But bottom line is we have to just get better collectively.”

Rees, 33, is in his second season with the Browns, having previously served as tight ends coach and pass game specialist. Prior to Cleveland, he held offensive coordinator positions at the University of Alabama and the University of Notre Dame.

The move comes as rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel continues to lead the offense. Gabriel, drafted 94th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, has shown flashes but hasn’t been able to fully spark the team. Stefanski confirmed Gabriel will remain the starter, despite the offensive struggles. Backup Shedeur Sanders is still recovering from a back injury.

Last season, Stefanski ceded playcalling to then-OC Ken Dorsey with similar results after a season-ending injury to Deshaun Watson. Dorsey was ultimately fired at the end of the season. Stefanski confirmed Watson is still on the PUP list and will not be opening practice this week.

The pressure is now on Rees to turn the Browns’ offense around and revitalize a team desperate for a spark. Whether this change will be the key to unlocking Cleveland’s potential remains to be seen.
