The claim comes after talks between the two leaders on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Busan, South Korea, focusing primarily on US-China trade.
According to an excerpt from an upcoming “60 Minutes” interview, Trump stated that Xi Jinping and other Chinese officials have made it clear that no action regarding Taiwan will be taken during his presidency, citing potential “consequences.”
The issue of Taiwan, a self-ruled island democracy claimed by China, remains a point of significant contention between the US and China. While the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act commits the US to providing Taiwan with the resources to defend itself, it does not explicitly state whether the US would intervene militarily in the event of a Chinese invasion.
When asked if he would order US forces to defend Taiwan, Trump declined to give a definitive answer, maintaining the long-standing US policy of “strategic ambiguity” on the matter. “You’ll find out if it happens, and he understands the answer to that,” Trump said regarding Xi Jinping’s understanding of the US response.
The Chinese embassy in Washington has yet to respond to requests for comment. The White House has also not provided specific details about when these alleged assurances were given.
