Deadly Stretch of NH163 Claims 200 Lives, Sparks Outrage in Chevella
Hyderabad, Telangana – November 3, 2025 – A tragic road accident near Khanapur Gate in Chevella Mandal, Ranga Reddy district, has once again highlighted the perilous conditions of National Highway 163. Today’s incident is just the latest in a series of accidents that have plagued the stretch, claiming the lives of over 200 people and injuring 600 in the past five years.
Locals are demanding immediate action to address the safety concerns, citing narrow roads, sharp bends, overloaded trucks, and rampant wrong-side driving as major contributing factors. The Hyderabad-Bijapur NH-163, specifically the Chevella-Vikarabad-Tandur section, has become notorious for its frequent accidents.
“It’s a nightmare,” said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, “Every month, we hear about another tragedy. How many more lives must be lost before something is done?”
A proposal to upgrade the NH163 from Appa Junction to the Karnataka border into a four-lane highway has been stalled due to delays in obtaining environmental clearances. The presence of numerous trees along the route has complicated the approval process from the Green Tribunal.
Past incidents include a fatal accident last December when a speeding lorry ploughed into vegetable vendors, killing four and injuring ten. Another incident involved a car colliding with a bike, resulting in the deaths of a couple. In August, a cement truck struck a motorcycle, killing a father and daughter near the Chevella bus stand.
In 2021, MP Ranjith Reddy called for the urgent conversion of the single-lane road into a four-lane highway. Despite efforts from the current government, progress has been hampered by political interference, according to local sources.
