Murugan Accuses DMK of Obstructing Electoral Roll Revision to Distract from Corruption Allegations
Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan (BJP) accused the ruling DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) party in Tamil Nadu of opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as a diversionary tactic. Murugan stated that the DMK is attempting to deflect attention from recent corruption allegations.
“Whenever there are allegations of massive corruption charges against the DMK, the party will rake up some other issue. That is why they are opposing SIR,” Murugan told reporters in Chennai.
The Minister referenced claims by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) regarding irregularities within the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department, as well as accusations of corruption related to paddy procurement in Tamil Nadu. He emphasized the necessity of the SIR, arguing it is crucial for ensuring the accuracy of voter lists by adding legitimate voters and removing fraudulent or duplicate entries.
Murugan pointed out the DMK’s past concerns regarding bogus voters and its previous calls for electoral roll revisions. He also noted that other political parties, including MDMK’s general secretary Vaiko, raised similar concerns during an all-party meeting on Sunday. Murugan urged all parties to cooperate with the SIR exercise. “The SIR exercise must not be politicised,” he stressed.
The SIR is currently underway in Tamil Nadu.
